Exmouth building company Bruce Turner Creations took out the award for best contract home over $1,000,000 at the Master Builder Association’s Pilbara and Kimberley awards.
The winning house on the Exmouth marina is a double-storey, rammed earth luxurious home with jarrah columns and front door.
The pool, decking and outdoor kitchenette in the backyard are fitting for the sunny Exmouth lifestyle.
Business owner Bruce Turner not only built the house but designed it as well.
“I’m not really interested in building little tiny boxes... I’m more of a creativity sort of guy and really want to get creative with what I’m doing,” he said.
“The owner here — he was such a busy guy so a lot of the time he’s left it up to me to make the decisions so all the make up for the house is pretty much all my ideas,” he said.
“That was just such an opportunity and you don’t get those opportunities much in life so to win an award for it and to get noticed for it — for me it was recognition.”
Mr Turner moved his family and business to Exmouth after spending eight years building and renovating luxury homes in the South West around Albany and Denmark.
He hopes the win will open up doors for him to get into the luxury home market in the Pilbara.
“Coming here I’ve had to start all over again from scratch (and) start from the bottom again,” he said.
“To win that over-a-milliondollar luxury home award was really what I wanted so I can really promote myself as part of that market up here.”
Although the demand for million-dollar homes in Exmouth is limited, Mr Turner remains positive about the future of the town he and his family have grown to love.
“The industry’s really tight. I think there’s 13 or 14 builders in the town at the moment and only 2500 to 3000 people here,” he said.
“These guys (who are) starting to come here and build here, especially people with a bit of money, they’re realising how nice a place (this is).”
“It’s a different way of life up here... I moved up in the middle of summer so hit the heat straight up and there was no bush and there were no trees and it was so dry and so barren but the years go on and you really just fall in love with the place.”
