State staff check fresh Karratha digs
Karratha-based State Government employees had a chance last week to walk around their new offices in the Quarter ahead of the building’s fit-out.
Government departments will account for the entire second floor of the building, moving over from current offices, many of which have fallen into disrepair.
At the opening of the Quarter earlier this month, Pilbara MLA Brendon Grylls used the Department of Mines and Petroleum as an example of why new facilities were sorely needed.
“Before if you were a government worker and got sent to the north you thought ... I’ll do my time and get back to Perth,” he said.
“The Department of Mines and Petroleum that regulate the biggest resource sector in the world used to be in a commercial building over there (where) the airconditioner worked every third day. That was seen to be good enough, that is what we used to accept.
“So thank you with putting up with that up until now and I hope the new digs are a little more appropriate for the work you do.”
Mr Grylls said the Pilbara deserved appropriate infrastructure such as the Quarter as the region drove the nation’s regional agenda.
