Thousands have no official ID
Thousands of WA Aboriginal children have no official identity and are in a legal limbo.
A study published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health this week shows more than 4600 children born to Aboriginal mothers in WA between 1996 and 2012 did not have their births registered.
This meant almost one in five Aboriginal children under age 16 had no official identity and would struggle to open bank accounts or get a licence or a job.
Parents were required to register a birth within 60 days and it costs $47 to get a birth certificate.
