Maddy, Opa defy the rain
School holidays have been a little damp this year, but it certainly hasn’t stopped the fish from biting.
Young Maddison Gregor was fishing at the marina in front of EGFC with Hans Venrooy (Opa), her uncle Steve and Damon visiting from Albany. They managed to get about an hour of casts in before the weather turned.
Maddy has had her rod since Christmas and this was her first real attempt at fishing after many practices at home. Maddy used a Jarvis Walker reel and rod with 10lb line. She caught three different species including the one pictured this week.
By Maddy’s third catch Opa wasn’t allowed to touch the rod, however, she conceded for help went it got too hard to reel in. We have entered Maddy into the monthly comp.
A customer was fishing inside the marina with his wife using mulie on a 3/0 hook when she hooked a decent fish. It was landed and a photo brought into the shop on camera for verification.
To our surprise and amazement, it was a southern mulloway, which is very rarely seen here. We have seen some caught in deep waters of the gulf, but this is especially interesting, for a fish of this species and size has never been recorded to our knowledge inside the marina.
The fish was more than 1m long and we would love for the guy to email us the picture please!
The northerly winds played havoc with boating enthusiasts and rough conditions kept many anglers ashore over the last week.
The best news is that the forecast is for a huge improvement. About time too. We’ve never seen such a long period of foul weather and we are looking forward to some regular patterns and stable conditions.
Luckily though, it is not just us, as many other parts of the State and country are experiencing this change. All I can say is that the rain should bring some great fishing with many of the mangrove-lined creeks soaking up the good nutrients, making a great haven for growth of various marine species.
The Ladies Day competition is on this Saturday, July 23, as per the EGFC calendar of events.
This fun day is designed to get the guys to take out the women and spoil them by helping the women catch fish all day.
There are several sections to the event including one inside the marina in case of rough weather. However, at this stage of writing the forecast looks great.
