Competition focuses on marine safety
Port Walcott Volunteer Marine Rescue is bringing back a local fishing competition in the Wickham-Point Samson area in an effort to recruit new members for the organisation.
Anglers will hit the bay, creeks and beaches on August 6 for the Port Walcott Fishing Extravaganza.
Organiser Andrew Cowell said the competition would be based on marine safety, with each vessel requiring a VMR member on board.
“The guys in Wickham and Point Samson don’t have fishing events out here, so we were looking at doing something internally for VMR members and it sort of snowballed,” he said.
“Talking to a lot of people out here, a lot of people all say they mean to join (the VMR) but haven’t got around to it.”
Cowell said the fishing competition would help get those people who had kept putting off joining the VMR on board.
There will be prizes for all children who enter the competition.
Mr Cowell said the VMR used to run Cracker Jack — a fishing competition between Rio Tinto employees in Dampier and Cape Lambert — about 10 years ago.
