Loyal Wickham lotto player wins big in Division 1
A Wickham local has become an overnight millionaire after winning more than $1.3 million in Lotto a little over a week ago.
The long-time male town resident and regular Saturday Lotto player of more than 30 years, whose identity otherwise remains a mystery at this stage, is now a cool $1,333,333 richer as one of only three WA and 15 national Division 1 winners of the Saturday $20 million Lotto Superdraw on July 30.
The lucky ticket was bought from Wickham Newsagency, where the winner is a loyal customer and confirmed the result last week.
He has approached Lotterywest to claim the prize money and said the news was still sinking in.
“I don’t think I’ll believe it’s real until I see the money in the bank,” he said.
“I was shaking when I realised I’d won and kept checking the numbers. I think I must have been in shock.”
The man is reportedly planning to put the money towards a stress-free retirement.
Wickham Newsagency owner Pam Maginess, who personally checked the ticket, said the winner was understandably thrilled at his stroke of good fortune.
“They are really, really happy,” she said.
“They are a regular Saturday ticket purchaser. They come in every Saturday, collect the ticket ... and on Monday check the ticket; that was pretty normal. But because they were aware there was a Division 1 win, they thought ‘wow’, checked the numbers, got it confirmed, and came down to see me. “I was absolutely stoked. “I couldn’t believe it.” Ms Maginess said this also marked a coup for Wickham Newsagency as it was the first Division 1 winning Lotto ticket it had sold since she took over the business in 2010. “It’s about time,” she said. “Karratha Newsagency’s had several in the time we’ve been here.”
Ms Maginess said reaction to the news had been “amazing” and created “quite a buzz”.
“We’re thrilled that our first Division 1 win has gone to a local who is a loyal customer,” she said.
The other WA Division 1 tickets were bought from The Lucky Charm in Meadow Springs and newsXpress Ocean Keys in Clarkson.
