High steaks for winners
Local businesses gathered at the Steak Shack last Tuesday night to hear the winners of Spirit Radio’s annual Best of Karratha Awards.
The awards are voted for by the public and celebrate local business’ contribution and service to the town.
This year was the biggest year for the Best of Karratha competition after receiving 36,000 votes from the public.
Spirit Radio station manager Judith Chapman said the response was overwhelming.
“It actually started with a massive bang and we were just overwhelmed by nominations and then overwhelmed by voting as well,” she said.
“The social media side of things has really helped grow the competition so that’s been really huge.”
Despite the huge numbers, there were a few categories that only came down to several votes.
Empire 6714 took out best coffee by the skin of their teeth and Blanche Bar was lucky to win best pub/bar with less than 10 votes getting them in at first place. Pilbara Plants and Pets cleaned up at this year’s awards taking home best customer service, best retailer and best tradie/ builder.
Natasha Selten of Pilbara Plants and Pets said she was “stoked” to have taken out three gongs, particularly best customer service.
“It’s one of the things we work really hard to achieve,” she said.
“I’m always nagging my staff to give the best customer service they can.”
The other stand-out business of the night was the Steak Shack who was named overall winner and took out 50 percent of the votes for best steak.
Steak Shack owner Holly Loxton said she was happy with the result for their relatively new business.
“It means that we’re on the right track, doing some good things in Karratha and everyone is really supporting us and it’s just been brilliant,” she said.
