Art awards kick off weekend action
The Hedland Art Awards ceremony and exhibition opening will kick off a weekend packed full of art and entertainment events tomorrow night.
The region’s most prestigious art awards celebrate and showcase the creative talents of artists from all over the State.
Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery exhibitions and gallery co-ordinator Amy Muhkherjee said the event was a great night out and the gallery’s social and artistic highlight of the year.
“It brings friends together over art, wine awards and a great space in a wonderful garden setting,” she said.
“If you’ve never been to a gallery opening, the Hedland Art Awards is the perfect start — we have a great night planned.”
Pilbara MLA Brendon Grylls and BHP Billiton’s general manager of rail Michael Bailey will open the event.
Animal rescue organisation SAFE will be operating the bar where you can buy drinks by donation.
The Esplanade Hotel will be catering the event with canapés and will be hosting an after party at their Empire Bar.
There is over $100,000 in prize money up for grabs over nine different categories to be judged by four renowned artists from across the State.
The nine categories include the most outstanding work, best work by indigenous artist, best work by a non-indigenous artist, Kathy Donnelly judges’ award, best work in a medium other than painting, best sculptural work, youth award, encouragement award and people’s choice award.
The exhibition will be opened at 6pm tomorrow night and will be available for public viewing until October.
