Man fined for fraud­u­lent time sheets

A Wick­ham man has been fined for de­fraud­ing a re­cruit­ment com­pany of more than $17,000.

Jay Tollemache pleaded guilty to five counts of gain­ing ben­e­fit by fraud and was sen­tenced in Kar­ratha Mag­is­trate’s Court last week.

He was ac­cused of de­fraud­ing re­sources in­dus­try re­cruit­ment com­pany DT Work­force, a di­vi­sion of Down­ing Teal, of $17,487.50 by sub­mit­ting fraud­u­lent time sheets in Au­gust and Septem­ber last year.

De­fence lawyer Adam Oswald told the court his client was honour­ing a com­mit­ment to re­pay the com­pany and had paid back $11,000 since June. Mag­is­trate Robert Young said a prison sen­tence was “not out of the ques­tion” for what were serious charges be­cause of the amount of money taken and the breach of trust to­wards an em­ployer.

How­ever, he said the de­fen­dant’s re­morse, guilty plea, and re­pay­ments so far were suf­fi­cient to war­rant a fine of $3000.
