Man fined for fraudulent time sheets
A Wickham man has been fined for defrauding a recruitment company of more than $17,000.
Jay Tollemache pleaded guilty to five counts of gaining benefit by fraud and was sentenced in Karratha Magistrate’s Court last week.
He was accused of defrauding resources industry recruitment company DT Workforce, a division of Downing Teal, of $17,487.50 by submitting fraudulent time sheets in August and September last year.
Defence lawyer Adam Oswald told the court his client was honouring a commitment to repay the company and had paid back $11,000 since June. Magistrate Robert Young said a prison sentence was “not out of the question” for what were serious charges because of the amount of money taken and the breach of trust towards an employer.
However, he said the defendant’s remorse, guilty plea, and repayments so far were sufficient to warrant a fine of $3000.
