A competition aimed at attracting more members to the Port Walcott Volunteer Marine Service has ended up “bigger than Ben Hur” with 138 competitors, resulting in 45 new social and active members joining its ranks.

The Port Walcott Fishing Extravaganza was held at the start of August and was divided into two sections, with team Search and Destroy taking out champion boat in the open water section.

Chris Todd, Sherene Cowell and Jason Loveday won champion male, female and junior respectively.

Other class winners in the open water included Nick Green, Hayley Carr, Craig Nicholas, Travis Line, Ryan Loudon, Mitch Brown, Chris Todd, Jason Loveday, Allison Williams, Roxy Humphries, Justin Bremer, and Nathan Loudon

In the beach and creek section, Cod Squad won champion boat.

Adam Delint, Bec Crnojlovic and Esther Willet-Green won the male, female and junior categories.

Other beach and creek category winners included Adam Delint, Dave Stevens, Bailey Ridley, Esther Willet Green, Dave Stevens and Brad Vanmaris.

William Darby was awarded the Halco prize pack for getting slapped in the face by a Spanish flag. One member of Team Tiger Sharks was awarded a 4WD package donated by Success Fabrications for having eight crab nets on board and not putting them in the water.

Team Snap It Up were also awarded a 4WD package for having boat troubles early and returning to the ramp announcing they had “bagged out” and were going home for a sleep.

Event organiser Andrew Cowell said fishing was slow early on but those who stuck it out came home with the goods.

“Special mention to Larry Davenport who came from Adelaide and spent tireless hours behind the scenes preparing and cooking so that everyone could enjoy a hamburger and roast gravy roll for dinner,” Mr Cowell said.

“A special thank you to all of our members who helped out in many ways.”

Mr Cowell said Port Walcott Volunteer Marine Rescue welcomed any members of the community who wished to get involved to attend its sundowners on the first Friday of each month.
