Donkey competes in Panna rodeo
A 1m. 16sec ride in a barrel race is not usually enough to pique competitors’ interest, let alone the crowd.
But then again, it is not every day you see a donkey in a barrel race.
That is exactly what happened to finish the local barrel races just before the competition proper got under way for the annual Robe River Rodeo in Pannawonica at the weekend.
Pyramid Station’s larrikin longterm manager Glenn Connell took his beloved donkey out on the circuit for what resembled more of a leisurely stroll rather than a mad dash around the turns.
Mr Connell said he was chuffed he didn’t come last either, as several competitors hit barrels or did not finish the race.
Having finished the local events, the main stage began with a moment’s silence for Blake Hallam, a gun North Queensland rodeo competitor who died in a vehicle accident late last week.
As was the case in Onslow, no bull riders managed to hit the eight-second mark to register a score for the meet but Wade McCarthy and Gerard Oversby, currently fifth and sixth in the rankings for 2016, came close.
Oversby again impressed in the bareback bronc, showing the crowd why he is number one in the category and all-round cowboy standings.
The ladies made a better day of it in the barrel racing with sub 18second times from the likes of Sally Latham and Maddi Edwards sure to move both riders up the standings.
Wendy Harris was one of several riders to get on with the job in the steer undecorating, removing the ribbon almost straight out of the blocks.
Usually, the Robe River Rodeo signals the end of rodeo season in the Pilbara, but Raging Roughstock has organised a rodeo at Whim Creek next month, which generated plenty of conversation at the Panna rodeo grounds.
The rodeo will be hosted on the second weekend of October.
