Rodeo gig part of hotel’s events push

Pilbara News - - News - Tom Zaunmayr

The transformation of the Whim Creek Hotel as an events destination will take its boldest step to date next month when a rodeo graces the pub’s grounds.

The pink pub hosted Wolf Creek star John Jarratt earlier in the year and was the site of a murder-mystery event last weekend but the rodeo is set to step it up another level.

While it is unlikely to rival the Robe River Rodeo for prestige at this stage, the location between the Pilbara’s two biggest population centres gives the event every chance of pulling a big crowd.

Whim Creek Hotel publican Bob Bongiorno said after dabbling in a few smaller events this year, the pub was ready to step up to the big league.

“We will have it set up with more bars around the place and the arena itself will actually be out the front,” he said. It is something I think fits quite nicely.

“We are surrounded by cattle stations and the pub is an events venue.

Mr Bongiorno said he was expecting a couple of thousand patrons to attend the two-day event. The campgrounds for the rodeo will be beside the Balla Balla road across from the pub.

Rodeo events will include saddle bronc, bareback, ladies’ and junior barrel, junior steer, bull ride and novice bull ride.

For those looking for something else over the weekend, the pub will also host a show ‘n’ shine by the NorWest Car Club, a pony club exhibition and a range of live bands and entertainment.

The rodeo will be held on October 8 and 9 and Mr Bongiorno said it would definitely become an annual event after this year’s launch.

Details for how to buy tickets for the rodeo and campgrounds are available on the Whim Creek Rodeo Facebook page.
