Disgust as kids play in raw sewage

Pilbara News - - News - Ben Leahy

Children in the Pilbara’s Parnpajinya community have been playing in water contaminated by raw sewage as the result of a broken water pump, Labor MP Stephen Dawson said.

“It’s absolutely scandalous that kids are playing in raw (sewage),” he said.

“The kids are at risk of drowning, getting hurt or getting sick from the filthy water.”

Raising the issue in State Parliament on September 6, Mr Dawson asked Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Peter Collier if he was aware of reports the community had “a massive unsecured sewage swamp that kids are playing in?”

Mr Collier said the Government became aware of the issue on August 30 and had completed plumbing work to repair the leak.

“Clean-up of the site is expected to be finished by September 9,” he said.

But Mr Dawson said the Government response was not good enough.

“Community members told me they first brought this leak to the Government’s attention in July but the information wasn’t acted upon,” he said.
