More behind face of it
Motorbikes, moustaches and chops are usually associated with men never keen to talk about their feelings, but they are just the items one new Karratha resident will be using to keep the conversation about men’s health firmly in the public eye.
Matt Farmer moved to Karratha about a month ago for a job with Yara and has been quick to involve himself in the Pilbara life
Mr Farmer will suit up this Sunday and take his Triumph motorbike for a ride around Karratha and Dampier in support of the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, an international campaign to raise awareness for men’s health.
The ride encourages “gentle folk” to embrace their inner dapper man with items such as monocles, facial foliage, tailored suits and silk vests.
“Being a former FIFO worker I actually lost a good mate in Queensland, so I think it’s good to promote men’s health and and get the message out there for the world to see and hear,” he said. “The mate who ended it for himself nobody even knew, he was chirpy right up until they found him one morning. But by then it was too late.
“You can definitely see the people who are struggling for the first few days they are back from R&R. Some of them are pretty slow and don’t want to be there, that is when you have to start promoting conversation.”
Mr Farmer said this year was all about making the ride known in the hope of attracting more riders next year.
That being said, he said he would be happy to see more men join him on the ride to Dampier this year too.
“It’s just a nice ride, dressed up so people ask, ‘what are you doing?’ and then you can pull them into that conversation.
“We’re not all superman, we’ve all got debts and problems, but I think that if you can chat about things it really helps.”
As for the chops and moustache: Mr Farmer said his wife loved the look but he could not wait to be rid of them.
Mr Farmer will be at the Leisureplex from 8am on Sunday. His ride starts at 9am.
