An adorable red cloud kelpie pup paws at the heartstrings in the latest trailer for Red Dog: True Blue.

The prequel to the smash-hit 2011 movie Red Dog, set in the mid-1960s, is a story about friendship, family and finding home wherever that may be.

“Not so long ago, a film about a legendary dog brought communities together,” the trailer voiceover begins.

“I’m a stubborn man from a hard land, you may go away but there will always be a home here for you,” Bryan Brown’s character Grandpa says over the clip.

The film stars Levi Miller as Mick, whose life changes forever after the remarkable dog (canine co-star Phoenix) bounds into his life and becomes his best mate.

Open skies and the beautiful red landscape of the Pilbara are showcased in the family film, which is set on a cattle station that captures the spirit of Australia.

It was partially shot on Karratha Station in the middle of 2015. Miaree Pool and its surrounding hills feature in the trailer.

The trailer appears to show Red Dog as a young puppy being found in a box up a tree by Miller at one of the water holes.

Red Dog: True Blue hits cinemas on Boxing Day.
