“Folk punk surfedelia” band Ill Starred Captain will hit the stage at Port Hedland’s Walkabout Hotel and the Capricorn Bar and Grill in Newman this weekend.

Justin Francis and Scott Bassham make up the indie duo who hail from Port Lincoln South Australia.

Francis, the band’s drummer, said their sound was a fusion of all their favourite genres of music.

“We love our rock and roll music, our folk, our punk, our psychedelic music, surf music, blues, jazz — so we try grab all bits of inspiration from those styles then throw that into our own,” he said.

“(We’ve) come up of our style of music ... folk/punk/surfedelia.”

They have toured WA extensively in their 16-year history and the Pilbara in the past nine years.

Francis said the band started venturing to WA after finding the abundance of pokie machines was dampening the atmosphere in music venues in their home State.

“We basically found this whole new audience and we kept coming back,” he said.

“As we worked up the coast over a few years we suddenly realised there was a mining boom in the Pilbara. We met bands and people going ‘come on up’... we’ve made friendships and (there’s) just a really good work ethic among venues.”

Ill Starred Captain will play a free gig at the Dampier Mermaid this Friday, September 30.
