A project to install attractive steel bicycle racks in Paraburdoo has secured the town a top prize in the Tidy Towns Awards for environmental sustainability in regional WA.

The local committee was awarded the Young Legends prize for a range of projects, which included a fourmonth campaign to install bicycle racks at some of the town’s busiest locations.

Donated steel was sorted at the Men’s Shed before it was sent to Perth to be laser cut.

The steel bike racks were left raw to reflect the natural surrounds.

Bike racks were placed in front of the Paraburdoo shopping complex, at Anzac Park, and near the indoor cricket facility.

Paraburdoo Men’s Shed volunteer Gavin Penfold said the project was coordinated by the Shed but had involved a range of community members.

“The Men’s Shed group, which included women, put it all together," he said.

“We had an open day for the youth of the town and they came along and saw what we were doing.

“The outcome is there are bike racks around town that the kids can use — they won’t be throwing their bikes on the ground for people to trip over.”

Shire of Ashburton deputy president Linton Rumble said the bike rack designs had been making an impression on people around the town.

“People see them and they just can’t believe the designs on them,” he said.

Mr Rumble said the project was one of many included in the award submission.

“This project put us over the line for the Young Legends Award, but we (also) had the new Paraburdoo skate park project, the childcare centre being built, (and) there were a few other things,” he said.

“For Paraburdoo, the concept behind the Young Legends caught us off guard … but for this category, our submission was very good.”

Mr Rumble said the 12-month time frame for the awards meant towns had to be proactive in a short time.

“We are already thinking about projects we can do to enter in next year’s Tidy Towns,” he said.

Mr Rumble said the town had entered Tidy Towns for most of the past 30 years and his dream would be to see all four Shire of Ashburton towns put in a submission next year.
