Dual bins for Karratha homes
Lugging bags of bottles and cardboard to the tip will soon be a thing of the past with the City of Karratha introducing a kerbside recycling service.
The new dual-service approach will be added to household waste collection services across the City of Karratha.
Each household will soon receive a recycling bin for a fortnightly collection to begin in the new year.
City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the council had investigated options to determine the most effective way to deliver the waste collection service to residents.
“A competitive tender process was run in July to see whether alternative service delivery models could achieve a higher level of service at a reduced cost,” he said.
“It was found that an external provider could not only deliver current services, but include recycling as well for a total cost that is less than our present delivery expenditure.
“We know the implementation of a kerbside recycling service has been a top priority for our residents with feedback throughout our Community Survey and Facebook page indicating the need for its provision.
“Being able to provide residents with this new service at no added cost to ratepayers is an excellent result for both the community and for council.”
The service will be delivered by City of Karratha contractor Cleanaway.
Scheduling details will be released in the coming months.
