Sports awards back this year
Nominations for the fifth annual round of the City of Karratha FUTURECLUBS Community Sports Awards are now open, and this year an Australian basketball pioneer as the award ceremony guest of honour is an added bonus.
The City of Karratha Club Development Program FUTURECLUBS awards are held each November to recognise the hard work and achievements of sports groups, coaches, players and volunteers in the City community over the past year.
Residents are invited to nominate themselves or someone else towards the eight categories including adult and junior sportsman and sportswoman, sporting group and coach of the year.
The guest of honour for this year’s awards ceremony was last week announced as former international and national basketball player and coach Michele Timms, who will come to Karratha just days before she is set to be inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame.
Timms will also be holding a community meet-and-greet event and basketball development workshop while in town.
City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said local sport was an important part of community life in the City and deserved recognition with regular awards such as these.
“The FUTURECLUBS Community Sports Awards present an opportunity for the sports community to come together and show their appreciation for the individuals and teams that work so hard, often in a volunteering capacity, to ensure sports thrive in the region,” he said.
“It’s a chance to celebrate success and share in the achievements of sports groups within the City of Karratha, embracing the special members of our community that are so dedicated to them.”
He said nominations for the sports awards continued to increase every year.
“Sports play a vital role in our community and as sporting clubs continue to grow in the region, so too do our awards,” he said.
Applications close on November 9. Winners will be announced at an awards night on Friday, November 18.
Everyone who submits an application will go into a draw to win $200 prize money towards a sports club of their choosing. Visit karratha. wa.gov.au/futureclubs.
