Residents celebrate big race
As Almandin crossed the finished line last Tuesday, pubs, TABs, bars and restaurants all over Karratha were packed with punters celebrating the Melbourne Cup.
Onyx events hosted a lunch at the Leisureplex in conjunction with Apex Karratha.
More than 100 people were treated to a buffet lunch, drinks, sweepstakes and live entertainment and raised more than $400 for Apex Karratha, which works to aid and support community organisations and members in need. Ibis Styles had a booked-out deluxe buffet lunch with 80 guests.
There was an impressive spread of food as well as a raffle, sweepstakes and prizes for best dressed.
Ibis Styles Karratha food and beverage manager Ashleigh Shone hailed the luncheon as a success and said everyone looked like they had a great time.
“We most definitely will be holding another luncheon next year,” she said.
“It’s always been a great day at the ibis.”
It was a more casual but busy affair at the Tambrey Tavern with the TAB machines getting a good workout.
There were few fascinators in sight but the crowd of about 200 were in high spirits as they watched the Cup.
Exmouth’s Idaho Boutique set up a VIP marquee at the Potshot Hotel, where almost 40 people were treated to sparkling wine and finger food.
Boutique owner Janet Norriss said the event was good fun and the weather was suitably warm, but not too hot.
There was a Fashions on the Field competition for those who dressed up, with Victoria Stintes the winner.
Inside, about 200 people enjoyed the Potshot Hotel’s luncheon.
Potshot Hotel restaurant general manager Tai Paul said it was a great event and everything went smoothly.
More than 120 Tom Price locals flocked to the Mountain View Sporting Club to watch the race last Tuesday.
Mountain View Sporting Club operations manager Rebecca Hau said it was a successful day and a change of pace from last year, when only 30 or 40 people came down to celebrate.
