City of Karratha and Pannawonica Year 6 students have learnt some insider tips for making the big step up into high school at the annual Next Steps schools conference.

More than 300 primary school leavers from eight schools flocked to Karratha Senior High School on November 17 for the Karratha Education Initiative event, taking part in workshops on resilience, team-building, health, study skills and more.

They heard a presentation from leadership consultant Kate Lyon on how to look after themselves and build good support networks in the transition to high school.

Karratha Senior High School Years 10-12 student wellbeing co-ordinator Gina Martinovich said students had really enjoyed the variety and interactivity.

“I think it’s trying to just leave a little bit of knowledge with them that they’re not alone,” she said.
