FLORIST GRABS PLACE IN COMPETITION

Red Earth Flowers Karratha owner Melissa Thompson has beaten hundreds of florists from across the country and placed second in Tesselaar Flowers’ 2016 RockStar Florists competition.

The RockStar Florists is Australia’s number one floristry competition and attracts hundreds of nationwide entries across three categories — flowers to carry, flowers to wear and flowers to decorate.

Out of hundreds of entries, three floristry experts, Holly Hipwell, Melanie Stapleton and Julia-Rose, narrowed down nine finalists in each category.

The winners were then decided on by the judges and a public Facebook vote.

Ms Thompson had entries in all three categories but it was her decorations at a wedding at Tata’s restaurant in Point Samson late last year that caught the judges’ attention. “They’ve got 17 large netted crab pots, so the bride came in and basically said to us: ‘we want you to decorate out the back, this is our budget and we like soft pastel colours’ so that’s what we came up with and did the lights,” Ms Thompson said.

Ms Thompson and three other team members from Red Earth Flowers worked for hours in 40C heat to decorate the venue.

“We were on it for about four hours, climbing up ladders and hanging hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of flowers,” she said.

She made it into the finals, got more than 500 likes on Facebook and then placed second in the flowers to decorate category.

A florist for almost 30 years, Ms Thompson said she had never entered the renowned competition and was ecstatic when she found out she was a finalist.

“I screamed!” she said. “I think half the shopping centre heard.

“Just in itself being nominated was pretty huge and then to get second was amazing.”

Ms Thompson attributes the success to her design’s originality.

“If you look at a lot of what’s on trend with flowers at the moment, hanging things are huge and ... there’s a lot of florists that say ‘that’s a really good idea, I’ll take that spin and do my own version of it’,” she said.

“But what we did was completely different to what anybody else had put in, so that probably made ours stand out more than some of the others because it is completely different.”

Tesselaar’s RockStar Florists competition has been running for the past five years, with its following growing each year.
