Top award for Fortes­cue chief

Fortes­cue Met­als Group chief ex­ec­u­tive Nev Power was last week named WA Busi­ness Leader of the Year at the 2016 AIM WA WestBusi­ness Pinnacle Awards.

Aus­tralian In­sti­tute of Man­age­ment WA chief ex­ec­u­tive Gary Martin pre­sented the award to Mr Power in front of hun­dreds of busi­ness lead­ers at the an­nual awards night at Crown Perth.

The win­ner is se­lected by a 10strong em­i­nent panel in­clud­ing for­mer premier Richard Court, Deputy Premier Liza Har­vey, for­mer WA gov­er­nor Ken Michael and busi­ness­man Stan Per­ron.

Raised on a cat­tle sta­tion in north­ern Queens­land, Mr Power suc­ceeded FMG founder Andrew For­rest as chief ex­ec­u­tive five years ago. Since then he has set about trans­form­ing the com­pany.

In the past five years FMG has also be­come one of WA’s big­gest em­ploy­ers and an im­por­tant brand name in China, WA’s most im­por­tant ex­port mar­ket.
