A competition for the best Christmas display in Karratha’s shopping centre has been won by Red Earth Flowers.

Karratha City Shopping Centre ran the competition to encourage shop owners to adorn their shopfronts with Christmas decorations in the spirit of the festive season.

Red Earth Flowers owner Melissa Thompson said children had loved the display.

“We do windows every two to three weeks, so when the opportunity came up to do something specialised for Christmas and win a hamper, we thought ‘why not?’,” she said.

“Santa came all the way from Victoria, and the rest we bought locally and popped it all in.”

Part of the winning package was a $1000 donation to the association of the winner’s choice.

Ms Thompson said she would donate her prize to the Tequiras Netball Club.

Karratha City Shopping Centre manager Melanie Garbin said the competition was all about community engagement.

“We want the communityretailer Christmas window display to encourage retailers to adorn their windows,” she said.

“This is about giving back to the community and our retailers being able to do that because we are the heart of the community.

“We would like to see more next year and build on this.”

Ms Thompson also won a $300 hamper for her troubles.

Edge Sports and Surf and Red Dot were highly commended.
