Boardwalk up in flames
A bushfire has destroyed a boardwalk and forced the closure of Dales Gorge and surrounds in Karijini National Park.
The wooden platform at Fern Pool was completely destroyed after a fire caused by lightning burned in and around the gorge for five days from December 29.
Both ends of Dales Gorge remain closed while park staff work to make the area safe, which is expected to take several weeks.
The nearby campground and day-use recreation area has also been closed, along with Banjima Drive between Karijini Drive and Kalamina Road.
The Department of Parks and Wildlife, the Shire of Ashburton and volunteer firefighters from Tom Price helped control the blaze, which burnt through 18,000ha. Dales Gorge, on the eastern side of Karijini National Park, is one of the most popular gorges in the park, with upgraded metal walkways recently installed to improve accessibility to the Fortescue Falls end.
