Three female marine turtles tagged by researchers on Ningaloo Reef will stand out from the crowd thanks to new names given to them by the public in the Ningaloo Outlook turtle-naming competition.

The BHP Billiton-CSIRO Ningaloo Outlook program ran a competition for members of the public to vote on their tagged turtles’ names for the first time this year, and last week announced the winning names as Jurabi, Ningles and Budgial.

Jurabi, named for the place where one entrant saw turtles for the first time, was the popular favourite with 47 per cent of the vote. Ningles, shortened from Ningaloo, and Budgial, an Aboriginal name for sea turtle from a traditional story, were second and third.

The competition was open for voting to all members of the public and received a total of 665 votes.
