Help new club design logo
A little athletics club starting up in the Shire of Ashburton wants the community to help design its logo.
A small group of organisers are working to establish a branch of the national youth athletics program in Tom Price, which will join existing Pilbara LACs in Karratha, Port Hedland and Newman.
The group will be open to competitors aged six to 17 from Tom Price and Paraburdoo, but is also likely to cater to children as young as four in a non-competitive games format.
Club president Shane Scott said he had wanted to start a club since moving to Tom Price early last year, after his children, who had been part of a little athletics club in Perth, had to commute to Newman for the program. “Just about every other sport option here is team sports, but there’s very little for individual sport,” he said.
Organisers are also running a competition asking residents to help them design an Ashburton club logo to promote community involvement.
Designs must be fresh and positive, easily readable, and contain the words “Ashburton Little Athletics”.
There is a $50 prize on offer for the winner.
Mr Scott said little athletics clubs taught children fitness and technical skills that underpinned all kinds of sports and provided a talent pathway for young local athletes. “They don’t even need to be running first second or third all the time because we focus on personal bests, so we encourage kids to be constantly improving throughout the season,” he said.
“That’s what I’ve seen with previous clubs as well — as long as kids are constantly improving, they get recognised.”
The Ashburton club is expected to start up in several months time.
Logo competition entries close on Monday at 5pm.
