Construction of the base for a rehomed telescope in Exmouth is on track with works expected to be completed by mid-2018.

The space surveillance telescope will be shipped from the US to Australia mid-2017.

Integration with the Harold E Holt Naval Communications Station is mooted for later in the year.

A Department of Defence spokesman said local businesses such as Exmouth Civil had been engaged on the project.

“A number of Exmouth-based companies ... were appointed to renovate and upgrade a building within the Naval Communication Station Harold E Holt precinct, which will be used as a site office during the construction,” he said.

“Local industry will continue to be engaged where possible throughout the project.”

SITZLER is the integrated management contractor for the construction of the space surveillance telescope facility.

It is anticipated that Australian initial operating capability will be met at the end of 2019.

The telescope will become a vital part of monitoring and protecting satellites.
