Boat-beach improvements a step closer
Foreshore improvements to Wickham Boat Beach have been fast-tracked after funds flagged for upgrading the boat ramp were reallocated at the community’s request.
The City of Karratha had set a budget of $100,000 for redesigning the ramp, but at their January meeting, councillors voted to instead use it to implement the first stage of the Wickham Boat Beach Foreshore Management Plan.
City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said their decision was based on feedback from a Wickham workshop group, which said the existing ramp satisfied user requirements and foreshore upgrades were a greater priority.
“Redirecting these funds towards priority actions identified in the Wickham Foreshore Management Plan, which has been prepared with valuable input from members of the Wickham community, will enable the City to deliver priority works this financial year,” he said.
The first stage of works will involve closing unauthorised tracks on the beach, installing dune fencing, revegetating the area and improving beach access.
Mr Long said the City intended to apply for State Government coastal facilities funding next financial year for the boat-ramp design.
