Think for yourself before you vote

Pilbara News - - Opinion - S. White, Wickham.

Having lived and worked in the Pilbara a long time, I’m hearing lots of view points in regards to the upcoming election.

Can I suggest that if you work for Rio Tinto or BHP Billiton, please vote according to your own conscience — think for yourself.

I understand the staff at one company can’t even use the toilet in peace. I find this level of communication very distasteful — it reminds me of what went wrong in communist Russia.

The iron ore price is at $120 per tonne. The Nationals are proposing a $5 per tonne rent payment. This is based on an increase from 25 cents, which has never increased since the 60s. I know I don’t have any bills that never go up, so why should BHP and Rio?

As for losing jobs, I get that. My dad got made redundant after 30-plus years of local service and was thrown on the scrap heap. If you think your job is safe without this increase in rent, then I believe you are incorrect.

Across the world, more and more jobs are being automated and BHP and Rio will continue to do so.

For me, this election comes down to either BHP and Rio paying a bit more and being better corporate citizens or me and you paying more. It’s an easy answer.
