Pi­rates fall to Krak­ens

This week fea­tured the pre­lim­i­nary fi­nals of the 2016-17 Kar­ratha Wa­ter Polo As­so­ci­a­tion’s sea­son with all win­ners pro­gress­ing to next week’s grand fi­nals.

The King Bay Krak­ens downed last year’s pre­miers the Pil­bara Pi­rates 12-6 in game one. Caitlin Read scored six goals and Hay­ley Ed­wards with two for the Krak­ens.

Anouska An­gove and Bon­nie Kaest­ner toiled hard for the Pi­rates with three goals each.

The Bur­rup Bar­racu­das beat the Searip­ple Sharks 10-4 in the sec­ond ladies game. For­mer Aus­tralian Coun­try rep­re­sen­ta­tive Alex Gal­lagher dom­i­nated the de­fen­sive play for the Sharks and con­trib­uted with a goal, and Kylie Vial and Sarah St­in­ton played well for the Bar­racu­das.

The men’s pre­lim­i­nary fi­nal was a tight see-saw­ing af­fair with the Bar­racu­das downing the Krak­ens by a point, 8-7. Bar­racu­das’ Nigel Kroon­s­tu­iver (five goals) and Rhys Knight com­bined for the goal of the year and ral­lied the team to a win.

Kracken By­ron New­bold fin­ished with five goals and ju­nior star Char­lie Re­gan with two. Next week the Bar­racu­das will take on the Krak­ens in the women’s grand fi­nal at 6.30pm.

The Pi­rates will be seek­ing a third con­sec­u­tive premier­ship against the Bar­racu­das at 7.20pm.
