Pirates fall to Krakens
This week featured the preliminary finals of the 2016-17 Karratha Water Polo Association’s season with all winners progressing to next week’s grand finals.
The King Bay Krakens downed last year’s premiers the Pilbara Pirates 12-6 in game one. Caitlin Read scored six goals and Hayley Edwards with two for the Krakens.
Anouska Angove and Bonnie Kaestner toiled hard for the Pirates with three goals each.
The Burrup Barracudas beat the Searipple Sharks 10-4 in the second ladies game. Former Australian Country representative Alex Gallagher dominated the defensive play for the Sharks and contributed with a goal, and Kylie Vial and Sarah Stinton played well for the Barracudas.
The men’s preliminary final was a tight see-sawing affair with the Barracudas downing the Krakens by a point, 8-7. Barracudas’ Nigel Kroonstuiver (five goals) and Rhys Knight combined for the goal of the year and rallied the team to a win.
Kracken Byron Newbold finished with five goals and junior star Charlie Regan with two. Next week the Barracudas will take on the Krakens in the women’s grand final at 6.30pm.
The Pirates will be seeking a third consecutive premiership against the Barracudas at 7.20pm.
