Only a one-week break between rides was no deterrent for Pilbara bikers, who roared back onto the road last weekend for major annual charity ride the Karratha Bikers’ Association Poker Run.

Conditions were fine for the Saturday afternoon trip from Karratha to Dampier, Wickham, Cossack and back, which this year raised about $3500 for the young players of Karratha Junior Rugby League.

Despite coming one week after a gruelling Black Dog Ride from Port Hedland to Dampier, a turnout of about 70 riders from the KBA, Hedland Riders, Pannawonica Riders, Pilbara Motorcycle Sisters, the IWI Riders Pilbara and the public took part.

KBA president Matt Peters said the money raised would be used to buy training equipment for the rugby league.

Poker Run funds go towards a different local community cause each year, with recent recipients including the Karratha RSL sub-branch, local primary schools, the Smith Family and the Karratha Autumn Club.

“We do have a lot of individual groups that come to us and we try to share it around as much as we can,” Mr Peters said. “We especially like supporting sporting groups because (the donations) are likely to be around for a little while.”

Riders collected a card towards their poker hands at each stop on the trip before new Karratha resident Mick Byers eventually claimed the best poker hand prize of $300.

KBA member Shane Kilvington said the club was proud of its Poker Run tradition, which was now in its 27th year. “It’s a ride for similar like-minded people that love to ride, and we’re doing it for a good cause,” he said.

The KBA will present the junior rugby league with their donation in the next few weeks.
