Carpark upgrade more welcoming

Pilbara News - - Opinion - Peter Long Peter Long is the City of Karratha Mayor

The one disappointing aspect of our new airport has been the front of the terminal and carpark.

It was always planned to upgrade this part of the facility, but we have had to do some detailed design and costing works before we could begin. This work has now been finished and a tender awarded for a multimillion-dollar upgrade.

The scope will involve a total rework of the paved area at the front to include planter boxes, sunshades, seating, lighting, CCTV, reticulation and new quality paving tiles. The area will be substantially wider — a security requirement — and will include sun and rain shades extending from the terminal doors out to the carpark.

In the carpark, traffic will be re-routed and entry/exit gates relocated to make access and egress simpler and safer.

The internal road layout will be changed to provide a “kiss-andride” drop off area and signage, landscaping and drainage replaced.

Not only will this work greatly improve the useability of the terminal but it will be much more attractive for people, with more trees and greenery to welcome new arrivals.
