Great start to season despite heat
The mountain biking season got off to a fabulous start at the weekend with an amazing 75 riders braving the hot weather for the first race of the Burrup Mountain Bike Club’s championship series.
Racing kicked off behind the BMX track on Saturday afternoon.
Many of the riders were relatively new to mountain biking, with some using the club’s loan bikes.
There was a record turnout with the most women riders (21) and juniors (10) ever at a club race round.
Race placings were hotly contested, highlighting those who had been spending time out on the trails over summer.
Junior riders Will Gethin and Dylan Muller are both under 18, but pushed the adult riders, showing what is possible with a few years of practice.
A junior rider from last season, Toby Muller, 18, is now in the WA Downhill junior development squad.
The club’s social committee put on a barbecue post-race for many hungry riders and the vast majority stayed to socialise as the sun went down.
