City to fund events in grant limbo

The City of Kar­ratha has stepped in to sup­port a se­ries of com­mu­nity events en­dorsed un­der Kar­ratha CBD ac­ti­va­tion grants af­ter their fund­ing was de­layed pending a State Gov­ern­ment re­view.

A spe­cial coun­cil meet­ing was held on Mon­day, May 8 to de­cide what to do with ap­pli­ca­tions ap­proved in re­cent months un­der the Kar­ratha City Cen­tre Ac­ti­va­tion Grants af­ter the scheme’s State Gov­ern­ment fund­ing was sus­pended in early Fe­bru­ary.

The grants are funded by Roy­al­ties for Re­gions through LandCorp and dis­trib­uted by the City of Kar­ratha for events that in­crease pub­lic en­gage­ment with the city cen­tre.

Coun­cil­lors voted unan­i­mously in favour of sup­port­ing events which had al­ready been en­dorsed through mu­nic­i­pal fund­ing, to a to­tal of $91,000, to al­low them to go ahead as planned.

How­ever, they also car­ried a mo­tion to seek re­im­burse­ment from LandCorp for the ex­pense.

Events that will now be cov­ered by the City in­clude the large-scale City to Surf fun run for Ac­tiv, a nine-day ice-skat­ing event pro­posed by Wrapped Cre­ations and the Kar­ratha City Mar­kets.
