Mob focus on road safety
Indigenous communities are being encouraged to adopt a “safe system” approach to improve road safety.
The safe system approach targets better road safety on roads and footpaths, cars, speeds, and road use.
Road Safety Commission statistics revealed a staggering 34 people have died on regional roads this year compared with 26 deaths in metropolitan WA. In the 10-year period from 200413, 875 people were killed or seriously injured in the Pilbara region.
In 2003, 859 people were killed or seriously injured on regional roads, 82 of which were in the Pilbara.
Road Safety Commissioner Kim Papalia encouraged communities to get the conversation started by downloading RSC’s Keep Your Mob Safe guide successfully adopted by Bidyadanga community, near Broome.
