Mob fo­cus on road safety

In­dige­nous com­mu­ni­ties are be­ing en­cour­aged to adopt a “safe sys­tem” ap­proach to im­prove road safety.

The safe sys­tem ap­proach tar­gets bet­ter road safety on roads and foot­paths, cars, speeds, and road use.

Road Safety Com­mis­sion sta­tis­tics re­vealed a stag­ger­ing 34 peo­ple have died on re­gional roads this year com­pared with 26 deaths in metropoli­tan WA. In the 10-year pe­riod from 200413, 875 peo­ple were killed or se­ri­ously in­jured in the Pil­bara re­gion.

In 2003, 859 peo­ple were killed or se­ri­ously in­jured on re­gional roads, 82 of which were in the Pil­bara.

Road Safety Com­mis­sioner Kim Pa­palia en­cour­aged com­mu­ni­ties to get the con­ver­sa­tion started by down­load­ing RSC’s Keep Your Mob Safe guide suc­cess­fully adopted by Bidyadanga com­mu­nity, near Broome.
