Carnival to determine best in north

The North West Hockey Championships are due to return next month after taking a one-year break.

This year’s event, to be held in Karratha on Saturday, June 24, is expected to draw players from Tom Price, Port Hedland and Newman as well as Karratha to decide who is the best of the north in the hockey stakes.

Last year’s championships in Tom Price were cancelled because of unforeseen circumstances, meaning the competition has not been held for two years since Karratha took the title in 2015.

Event organiser and Nickol Bay Hockey Association committee member Steve Cook said it would be a challenging but fun competition that pushed hockey players to perform on a full-sized field.

“The North West Championships is a great chance for players to get together and enjoy playing hockey on a full-sized field,” he said.

“The focus is to be the main regional hockey comp and also to bring together people who share a love of hockey. It is also the only time that any of us play on a fullsized field. The regular games that are played in Karratha, Port Hedland and Tom Price are all on small modified fields.”

Cook said the NBHA would be subsidising the event so there was no cost for out-of-town players besides transport costs, and it could also supply sticks and shin pads to those without to encourage as many players as possible to attend.

There will also be a focus on the social aspect of the competition and hockey challenges where participants can win individual prizes.

Places are still available for any hockey players, both male and female, interested in taking part.
