Smith a swinging success
A Karratha resident has taken home the trophy at the annual Pilbara Men’s Golf Open Championship tournament after narrowly defeating a teammate on the last hole.
This year’s competition for male golfers across the region was held at Karratha Golf Club last week, with 78 competitors from Karratha, Tom Price, Exmouth, Port Hedland and Newman golf clubs taking part across four grades.
Karratha golfer Vaughan Smith was crowned the winner with a score of 146, narrowly beating runner-up Dave Turner on 147 to claim the trophy and the first prize of a portable pizza oven.
Event organiser Gina Hipworth said the A-grade division had gone down to the wire between the top two competitors.
“It came down to the last hole . . . so it was a pretty eventful end to the competition,” she said.
“It was a tight competition all weekend.”
Bill Hutchison won the B-grade division, Exmouth’s Jason Ballard won in C-grade, and the D-grade honours were claimed by Andy Clifton.
Karratha Golf Club also took out the champion team prize based on the overall tally of the four best-performing individual golfers from each club.
Pilbara Men’s Golf Open Championship and its women’s championship counterpart rotates around the five regional clubs each year and has been running for more than 30 years.
Ms Hipworth said the longrunning event was a major attraction for golfers across the region and those interested in getting involved in the sport.
“It’s an opportunity for them to showcase their skills and it’s a prestigious event to win,” she said.
“There’s a lot of camaraderie among the golfers as well and we’re always trying to bring in new players . . . so it’s a great opportunity for (clubs) to bolster their numbers.”
She thanked all those who had sponsored and helped out at the event.
The Pilbara’s female golfers will get their chance to shine next month at the Women’s Golf Open Championships at Port Hedland Golf Club on July 22 and 23.
