Hub boost for town
Would you believe that the grand opening of the Dampier Community Hub was a year ago — on July 9?
So how has this first new facility in Dampier for nearly 40 years been? Terrific.
Previously, only 17 placements were available locally for the Early Learning Centre. Now, we have the Montessori ELC operating very successfully with 67 long day-care placements, 22 out-of-school placements and a licence for 80 places.
It is highly regarded and much sought after.
The new library has been a roaring success. Membership has increased by 23 per cent and patronage is up by 169 per cent — that’s more than 2.5 times. Issues have increased by 99 per cent, story-time attendance by 176 per cent and after-school activities have increased from five to 803 participants.
Previously, there was no doctor in Dampier — we now have 360 Health, which is highly valued by the community and has seen 2275 patients since opening.
The Hub has been great for community groups, too. More than 1000 hire hours of the community facilities have been recorded, half of which are permanent and include Dampier Family Playgroup, Dampier Art Studio, Draw and Learn, Tae Kwon Do and the IF Foundation.
The close proximity to the skate park and toddler playground has been a benefit and the attractive building and improved general area aesthetics mean it is now a venue for formal events, including a wedding last December.
The community hall now has quality audio-visual equipment, a large screen and new change rooms for stage events.
The City has operated the facility well below our budget and to top off a great year, the building won an Excellence Award at the Master Builders Awards.
So, the hub has been a great success and a huge boost for Dampier. Now for the Wickham version.
