A Karratha dog attack in which an animal was mauled in front of its owner and several children has led to a local man being fined $1000.

Last week the Karratha Magistrate’s Court was told a man had been walking his two dogs without a lead in the city’s Tambrey Estate several months ago when they ran at a passing terrier-cross being walked by its owner and two children. One of the man’s dogs grabbed the terrier and pinned it to the ground, not letting go until its owner struck it with a child’s scooter.

City of Karratha prosecutor, senior ranger Kim Sparks, said the two dogs involved in the attack had a history of causing problems and their owner had shown little to no remorse.

Magistrate Edward de Vries fined the man $1000 for the attack, plus court costs, but declined to order that the dogs be destroyed.
