Australia’s biggest hackathon is due to come to Karratha for the first time this weekend and aspiring innovators are being encouraged to become involved to help make it a success.

A local event for GovHack, an annual open data competition held at more than 40 locations across Australia and New Zealand over a 46-hour period, has been planned for Karratha on Friday to Sunday.

The event sees people work in groups to create a project page, proof of concept and a video that explains how government data can be reused to benefit the public in a different form. Along with an event in Albany this year, a Karratha event would be the first time a GovHack hackathon has been held outside Perth in WA.

CQUniversity is supporting the event and Pilbara study hub facilitator Sharyn Hearson said she had approached GovHack about holding the event in Karratha because of the sense of innovation and diversity of skills among its residents.
