Footy greats sing game’s praises

The smell of the sausage siz­zle and an­tic­i­pa­tion pierced the gath­ered crowd as the an­nual Celebrity Match kicked off last week.

Now in it’s ninth year, the New­man Vets Foot­ball Club event did not dis­ap­point as party go­ers left the Town Square open­ing to watch the game.

The day warmed up with a cur­tain-raiser be­tween the New­man ladies and a Kar­ratha team in an epic show of women’s foot­ball.

The Kar­ratha girls showed they don’t travel for noth­ing, dom­i­nat­ing the game against New­man.

Af­ter the women’s clash was the golden-ticket game, Aussie Gold ver­sus Choo Choos.

In the main game four ex-AFL play­ers come out of re­tire­ment to show the lo­cals just how it’s done in the big league.

Dave Hart, Richard Cham­pion, David Haynes and Daniel Mer­rit, ac­com­pa­nied by for­mer rugby league player and Queens­land le­gend Billy Moore, schooled New­man both on the ground and off.

With a strong first half by Aussie Gold, the Choo Choos found their foot­ing and rail­roaded the com­pe­ti­tion thanks to Rod­er­ick Lock­yer’s quick feet.

Com­ing down to the fi­nal sec­onds Aussie Gold man­aged to es­cape the Choo Choos’ for­ward line and go coast to coast to score.

Be­fore to the game the celebri­ties held a train­ing ses­sion for lo­cal chil­dren teach­ing them foot­ball skills to en­hance their games.

The ju­nior foot­ball Kick-It team showed the big celebs, great things come in small pack­ages with a 10-minute game to show­case their own skills.

For­mer Bris­bane Lions player Richard Cham­pion en­cour­aged ev­ery­one in the Pil­bara and wider WA to travel to New­man for the next Celebrity Match.

“It’s my third year here in New­man play­ing in the celebrity match with four other leg­ends and it was just fan­tas­tic,” he said.

For­mer Queens­land rugby league player Billy Moore could not stop singing the ru­ral town’s praise af­ter his visit.

“You’ll come to New­man and you’ll love it,” he said,

“The peo­ple are fan­tas­tic, the game is ex­cit­ing but more than that you get to mix with some leg­ends. ”All in all, you can’ beat it. “Best day of my life.” Af­ter the day of sweat, dirt and dust the Vets Celebrity Sports­man’s Night.

This gave the lo­cals had the chance to meet their sport­ing he­roes.

The night fea­tured an auc­tion in which Billy Moore’s signed game boots went for $2300 along with many other mem­o­ra­bilia items.

All the money raised goes back into the New­man com­mu­nity.
