Footy greats sing game’s praises
The smell of the sausage sizzle and anticipation pierced the gathered crowd as the annual Celebrity Match kicked off last week.
Now in it’s ninth year, the Newman Vets Football Club event did not disappoint as party goers left the Town Square opening to watch the game.
The day warmed up with a curtain-raiser between the Newman ladies and a Karratha team in an epic show of women’s football.
The Karratha girls showed they don’t travel for nothing, dominating the game against Newman.
After the women’s clash was the golden-ticket game, Aussie Gold versus Choo Choos.
In the main game four ex-AFL players come out of retirement to show the locals just how it’s done in the big league.
Dave Hart, Richard Champion, David Haynes and Daniel Merrit, accompanied by former rugby league player and Queensland legend Billy Moore, schooled Newman both on the ground and off.
With a strong first half by Aussie Gold, the Choo Choos found their footing and railroaded the competition thanks to Roderick Lockyer’s quick feet.
Coming down to the final seconds Aussie Gold managed to escape the Choo Choos’ forward line and go coast to coast to score.
Before to the game the celebrities held a training session for local children teaching them football skills to enhance their games.
The junior football Kick-It team showed the big celebs, great things come in small packages with a 10-minute game to showcase their own skills.
Former Brisbane Lions player Richard Champion encouraged everyone in the Pilbara and wider WA to travel to Newman for the next Celebrity Match.
“It’s my third year here in Newman playing in the celebrity match with four other legends and it was just fantastic,” he said.
Former Queensland rugby league player Billy Moore could not stop singing the rural town’s praise after his visit.
“You’ll come to Newman and you’ll love it,” he said,
“The people are fantastic, the game is exciting but more than that you get to mix with some legends. ”All in all, you can’ beat it. “Best day of my life.” After the day of sweat, dirt and dust the Vets Celebrity Sportsman’s Night.
This gave the locals had the chance to meet their sporting heroes.
The night featured an auction in which Billy Moore’s signed game boots went for $2300 along with many other memorabilia items.
All the money raised goes back into the Newman community.
