‘Trea­sures of Onslow’ on show

Onslow lo­cals and vis­i­tors will be treated to a fun-filled week­end of entertainment, live mu­sic, gourmet food, ac­tiv­i­ties and heaps more at the Pas­sion of the Pil­bara fes­ti­val this week­end.

The bi­en­nial fes­ti­val sees hun­dreds, some­times thou­sands, of peo­ple of all ages from all over the Pil­bara en­joy a range of events and ac­tiv­i­ties.

Shire of Ash­bur­ton pres­i­dent Kerry White said the fes­ti­val would show­case the many op­por­tu­ni­ties Onslow had to of­fer.

“De­signed as a cel­e­bra­tion to cap­ture the heart and soul of our vi­brant com­mu­nity as well as show­cas­ing a fan­tas­tic line-up of well-known Aus­tralian artists and per­form­ers, this year prom­ises to of­fer some­thing for ev­ery­one — lo­cals and vis­i­tors alike,” she said. “Lo­cals have long known of the trea­sures of Onslow, in­clud­ing the beau­ti­ful and rugged en­vi­ron­ment, the cli­mate, the pace of life and strength of the com­mu­nity spirit. With the de­vel­op­ments and trans­for­ma­tions tak­ing place in the com­mu­nity, Onslow’s trea­sures can stay a se­cret no more.”

Pas­sion of the Pil­bara kicks off with a launch party filled with great tunes and de­li­cious food on Fri­day at the Onslow Sports Club from 6pm.

MC Sean Chool­burra will have the crowd laugh­ing in be­tween stel­lar mu­si­cal per­for­mances from Fin­gers’ Mitchell Cullen, the Merindas and Para­pher­na­lia.

Renowned chefs Pete Man­i­fis, Anna Gare and Jesse Blake will cook up a storm at the culi­nary show­case this Satur­day at the Onslow Com­mu­nity Gar­den from 9am. Man­i­fis, Gare and Blake will also host a num­ber of demon­stra­tions at work­shops in the BHP Culi­nary Zone on Tha­lanyji Oval.

The culi­nary zone will be one of many things to do at Tha­lanyji oval on Satur­day. Pun­ters will be able to en­joy dozens of mar­ket stalls, ac­tiv­i­ties, rov­ing en­ter­tain­ers, food, free rides and plenty more.

Kids can get hands-on and go in the run­ning to win some prizes at the KHB pass­port chal­lenge or have a ball in the Kid’s Zone.

Skating crew Freestyle Now will be at the BHP Fish­bowl run­ning work­shops and com­pe­ti­tions for keen young BMXers, skate­board­ers and scooter rid­ers with plenty of great prizes up grabs. On the main stage, there will be live mu­sic through­out the day and evening from the Merindas, KC Small­town, Fitzroy Ex­press, Mikey Smith, Adam Har­vey and Beccy Cole.

For the first time, Pas­sion on the Pil­bara will in­clude the Theve­nard Is­land Open day on Sun­day.

Ticket hold­ers will be treated to a re­turn ferry trip to Theve­nard Is­land, ac­tiv­i­ties such as snorkelling, beach vol­ley­ball and pad­dle­board­ing, mu­sic from Mikey Smith and a bar­be­cue lunch catered by the fes­ti­val’s celebrity chefs.
