Accolades for leading whistle-blowers
Not to be left out of the North Pilbara Football League medal count last month, a number of the league’s umpires were honoured.
Head umpires Scott Buckingham and Rod Barden handed out two umpire-dedicated awards.
The R ising Star Award was given to Kirwin Vincent while the Golden Whistle was given to Phil Davies. Similar to milestone games players celebrate, umpires were also commended.
Harry Taylor and Barden were recognised for 150 games, Harry Hommel for his 200th game. Davies and Mick Findlay were commended for 250 games umpired.
In a special West Australian Country Football award, Barden received the NPFL Volunteer Award for his dedication to umpiring in the league.
“I lost my Mum last Sunday and she said to me before make sure you make it back to the footy,” he said. “So I feel very supported, it’s part of the job and I’m very proud to receive this award.”
This year the league had nine boundary umpires who will now graduate to field umpire training for next season.
