KOMBI GETS A SPARK

Pinjarra Murray Times - - DRIVE WAY -

VW’s famed Kombi and Microbus models are likely to be back on the roads – but not for another five or so years, and not quite as they used to be.

The iconic Kombis of yesteryear, now fetching huge prices on auction, will be reincarnated as a VW I.D Buzz and instead of the chaff-cutter sound of the old boxer engine, there will barely be any sound at all: it will be all-electric.

The battery pack will be underfloor, freeing up interior space, so even more backpackers of tomorrow will be able to call it home.

The concept vehicle has an output of about 275kW and can run for more than 400km on a charge.

It will have a hi-tech interior too, and VW says there will be two more electricwagens arriving about the same time as the I.D Buzz.

Switched on: the Microbus returns as the I.D Buzz – in about five years.
