Psychic didn’t see sentence coming

Pinjarra Murray Times - - OPINION -

A MAN who claimed to be psychic appeared shocked when he was sentenced to prison in Mandurah Magistrates Court on September 15 in relation to 13 offences, including random acts of violence against strangers.

The court heard the man, who cannot be named to protect a victim, breached community orders and violence restraining orders (VRO) with his offending.

During sentencing statements made by Magistrate Anne Longden, the man rubbed his face and appeared agitated.

The court heard in April last year he sprayed a stranger walking their dog with an unknown aerosol.

He hit this person and bit him during a struggle.

During sentencing Ms Longden described the incident as a “random act of violence”.

In November 2016, he breached a restraining order by kicking down the door to a bathroom and kicking his partner in the stomach while she was holding their child.

On December 28, he knocked a stranger off their bike, causing cuts and bruises.

The man breached numerous VROs from 2013 onwards.

Ms Longden said the man had a violent history.

She read excerpts from a psychological report which said the man had a chronic psychotic illness caused by drugs.

The report said he was at risk of developing permanent drug-induced schizophrenia.

“It has been brought under control in prison,” she said.

“It is frightening the age you began consuming drugs and alcohol.

“You believe you were psychic and have special powers.”

Ms Longden said his mental state had improved in custody.

He was sentenced to eight months in prison for aggravated assault, eight months for assault occasioning bodily harm and six months for assault occasioning bodily harm.

He was sentenced to one month cumulative for four breaches of VRO, breaching a community based order, criminal damage and disorderly behaviour in public.
