Safety challenge

Pinjarra Murray Times - - LET’S EAT -

BOATIES are being urged to take a 30-second challenge to ensure safety on the water this summer.

According to the Department of Transport, 30 seconds could be the time skippers and passengers have to grab lifesaving safety equipment during an emergency.

It wants people to take the challenge and get safety advice during free sessions this month.

Department safety education manager Laurie Adams said safety gear needed to be well maintained and easily accessible.

“There were 13 recreational boating fatalities recorded in WA in the 2016-2017 financial year, a record high and triple the recent annual average of four deaths,” he said.

“This initiative, which tests if people can gather flares, EPIRB, make a radio call and don a lifejacket in 30 seconds, responds to the detailed analysis of incident data, which showed that better maintenance of safety gear and improved accessibility could have limited the number of tragedies last year.

“The importance of safety gear can never be overstated; eight of the 13 deaths (62 per cent) on WA waters last year may have been prevented if the person had been wearing a lifejacket when they entered the water.”

Sessions run at Ocean Reef marina on November 20 from 7.30am to 9.30am, Hillarys Boat Harbour on November 22 and 24 from 7.30am to 9.30am and Two Rocks Boat Harbour on November 23 from 8am to 10am. People can also take the challenge at Woodman Point boat ramp on November 21 and 24 from 7.30am to 9.30am, Point Peron boat harbour on November 22 from 8am to 10am and Port Bouvard in Mandurah on November 23 from 8am to 10am.
