PERTH Zoo is turning 120 and to celebrate, it is bringing back some of the oldest animals to walk the planet: dinosaurs.

The exhibition will also showcase Australian prehistoric megafauna for the first time in the world.

Perth Zoo ‘dinosaur keeper’ Suzi Dolan said Australian megafauna included giant tortoises, giant wombats and marsupial lions.

“They’ve never been seen before, so it is a coup for Perth to be able to show them off before these extinct Australian native animals tour around the country,” she said.

Ms Dolan said the exhibition would educate the public about species extinction.

“Everyone loves dinosaurs and they share many characteristics with today’s amazing animals, but extinction doesn’t have to be one of them,” she said.

“To understand their story is to understand the need to protect today’s species from the same fate.”

The cost of the exhibition is covered in the zoo ticket, but the celebrations will also include paid activities such as Playleozone, where children can uncover dinosaur fossils in the sand, and Park Eye to Eye, a prehistoric tour of the zoo to learn about extinction and how to save wildlife.

The exhibition is from September 15 to January 20.
