FAMILIES got up close to plussized machinery, visited an active mining pit and walked among wildflowers during Alcoa’s 40 years of tours. Since 1978, more than 630,000 people have toured Alcoa’s WA operations, nearly five times the number of residents of the Peel region. Dawesville resident Mark Lucas took the opportunity to show his wife and two young children where he works at Willowdale. Mr Lucas said his family enjoyed visiting an active pit, where they saw an excavator load bauxite into haul trucks, then watched the trucks unload the rock into a crusher, where it was broken up.
