R AIDERS OF THE BROKEN PL ANET
Sci-fi shooter brings fisticuffs fun Format PS4 ETA Winter 2017 Pub MercurySteam Dev MercurySteam
After the damn near disastrous Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2, Mercury Steam could really do with delivering another hit. At least this hybrid blaster has an interesting concept going for it: part cover shooter, part brawler, Raiders’ intense firefights are stretched out over four separate online campaigns. Senior producer Dave Cox says each episode will last between 30 and 40 minutes, and had cited influences as varied as Joss Whedon’s Firefly and Red Dead Redemption.
The actual structure of the game’s shootouts looks interesting, too. Four players all work together battling space scoundrels, while a fifth, called the Antagonist, works with the AI to actively sabotage the shooty efforts of the others. All this cover blasting looks suitably fluid, but it’s the presence of meatylooking melee moves that really spice up this trigger-happy marksman.
Considering Raiders is coming to Xbox One X, and will run at 4K on Microsoft’s console, there’s a good chance the PS4 Pro version will also offer Ultra HD visuals and true HDR support. At any rate, this frenzied intergalactic outlaw certainly looks like a subversive shooter.
